AUTHOR STATEMENT:
My poetry looks to positively explore human potential, with an emphasis on love, spiritual growth and self awareness. It is very important to me that my work remains as open, accessible and as simply expressed as possible. My influences vary from the great traditional English visionary romantics through to the distillation of thought and leanness of expression offered by the Japanese haiku tradition, the shining examples of Rilke and Gibran – as well as (being a fully committed free verse poet…) the later technical breakthroughs achieved by leading Scottish concrete poets Ian Hamilton Finlay and Edwin Morgan.
WHAT THE CRITICS SAY:
“To write and sell poetry at a profit these days is a minor victory and a major achievement. Scott’s words gently unlock and force you to face and look at the world with a little more optimism. There are moments of deep joy and others, which take your breath away with simple incredible honesty”
G. White
“Scott Hastie’s verse is sympathetic, humanistic and positively affirmative. Accessibility is the touchstone of all Hastie’s output. The spiritual element in his writing is clear.”
G.E. Jones
“Scott writes meditative, reflective poetry that is steeped in the traditions of English verse. Concise and richly evocative, he should be widely read.”
R. Godwin
“Via an invisible gilded chain of perception, Scott Hastie generously leads us through an enthusiastic re-invention of the possibilities of new experience. His inspired words bestride the world with such ease, touching the deepest sensibilities of human beings everywhere.”

Erudite Scholar on New Poem – In a world…
Hi Scott,
This is a very beautiful poem that captures the essence of life.
Neena Sharma on New Poem – In a world…
My dear Scottie sir…What an enigmatic poesy, so profound! The true depiction of capricious life in a subtle manner.
Our Thoughts and Actions indeed shape our destiny. What is our Present will become our yesterday and the future shall become our Present. As you so articulately put it…
Such sublime mapping,
The code of tomorrow
Already built into
All our yesterdays.
All future Happenings are rooted in our Thoughts. We radiate our high energy , low energy Thoughts in to the Universe. And the people gauge us through the spectacle of our thoughts. After all, each individual is responsible for what he/she dishes out to the external world.
I am sure, God’s incognito plan has a wonderful Future, an untold story to unfold, in the coming years… Besides, The World Drama is preordained and beneficial. So no laments , no complaint …Only seeds of hope, fun and Joy renewed, in the upcoming Year! On this Happy note, a Merry Christmas to you and yours 🙂
With much regard and My Divine Love
Fondly
Neena

Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – In a world…
It was such a delight to read your latest poem and it does resonates with my soul. Your choice of words always mesmirises me. Indeed, in the world of uncertainties, we dream hope, crave and believe in the unknown. Despite many promises made and broken, faith thwarted and with volatile nature of many unawakened souls lingering admidst us, we choose to continue this journey of life towards the light. The code of tomorrow is indeed built in all our yesterdays. We are all tasked to decipher this code. Fascinating! Isn’t it?

“This fitful journey

No sideshow …”
Aah, and yes, there’s the catch for many of us. It’s all sideshow and the main stage is empty.
I love this! Absolutely brilliant . . .

There’s something very reassuring about the ending of your poem. It seems to be a reminder that even though many things seems to happen at random, there is a thread of meaning that ties everything together. All the best to you in the new year!
Lona Gynt on New Poem – In a world…
There have been a lot of great comments on circles of life and renewal, That is the central one eternal round center to the poem. I want to talk about “conceit” such a sweet little tilt of perspective to label life as a conceit, and so it is, pitted against the vastness of space and the pull of entropy, it would seem to be impossible for life to even exist at all, framing the wonder of it by the sweet use of one little word, well crafted and substantive to boot.
Lona Gynt on New Poem – In a world…
I agree, there is a “wheel of life” feel to that idea, I liked that too.

Dee on New Poem – In a world…
All I can say is another memorable poem. Is there another book out too?
Love your work, have a blessed Christmas and new year.
Scott says: Thanks for asking Dee – But No, not yet… Since threads pub 2016 I have over 60 new pieces in play, but probably no more than 30 I’d be happy to publish at this stage. And I want to keep the focus more exclusively on spiritual next time round, which rules some out at this point. So we will see…
You have Great Christmas and fulfilling New Year too

This is succinct and sweet. I particularly love the lines:
So here it is!
And there
It ever was too,
Oh, but we knew it then.
Such sublime mapping,
The code of tomorrow
Already built into
All our yesterdays.
The code of tomorrow speaks to those things that will be and alludes to the notion that what we are going to do has a kind of destiny to it, but then as he says it is built on ‘our yesterdays’ Well done and beautiful.

Loved the revisit to this poem… on the second read I particularly loved the last stanza… how the future is there in the yesterdays… the love that builds and grows.
Rev. Rob P. Mitchell on New Poem – In a world…
“No sideshow,
Albeit part
Of an ingenious conceit
That draws us tenderly
Towards the light,”
The word “conceit” popped off the page at me, making me think of Donald Trump, our misbegotten President, a very sick man who is slowly pulling our country into his own sick abyss… (Thank Heaven for Robert Mueller and his team of very bright lawyers!)
You probably used the word in my trusty 1949 Webster’s Dictionary’s first meaning: “A concept or thought.” We Americans (or at least I) tend to think of the word in terms of “An overweening idea of oneself.” I had to look it up because I was not aware of the 1st meaning! It may very well not be in modern American lexicons! Thank you once again for teaching me something of which I was unaware, my friend! All the best! — Bob

There seems to be a juxtaposition of what love offers and how to attain it. there are no algorithms for the state of universal bliss. it is based on the physical form & transcends into the spiritual world. it is always refreshing to read something so simple yet deepened by personal experience. you inspire us Scott. we are grateful for your creative output. continue to grace us with your wisdom. it really creates harmony and order.

Lovely poem. Your words mean a lot to me, since my journey is reaching it’s autumn. Our past does in some ways predict our future. You express this so nicely.
Bonnie Roberts on New Poem – In a world…

Julie Canfield on New Poem – In a world…
What a lovely image you [paint. I don’t always understand the complexity of poetry but if I am right this one talks of love. I wish I could believe love exists for everyone. This poem wants me to but I have trust issues which will not allow me to think someone can care deeply for a person whom their own parents never could love. AGAIN IT IS ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL PIECE and I am happy you have shared it. Your work always makes me think and reflect. I hope to one day use a bit of your work in one of my books.
This is suppose to be the season of giving and sharing so if you wouldn’t mind, may I share your work on my websites, please?
I may never have beauty in my world but it doesn’t mean I can’t share the beauty others have in theirs

I love all the divine images of this poem especially “In this thin bright air”, “see how boundless love/brings time to its knees/a gift beyond compare.” Thank you for the poignant rhythm in this poem which I really enjoyed, the imagery and bold metaphors. This poem is deserving of quite a few reads. I went back to it a few times. I love how the poem is driven not just by thought, and speech but also nature, and divinity.

Yeshi Gemaneh on New Poem – If you listen…
Listening is a mind set up or keenness on focusing to a certain action. Not listeningcould be lack of concentration; or destruction of thoughts because of differentreasons. Correlation of mind and thoughts, plus interest helping to listening and to focus attentively. I remember, as a child we used to go to neighbors or friends with a piece of message; and our parents warn us in advance: To listen to the message carefully so that we should not forget it. Listening is requiring attention and habit as well. Yes, listening to one another positively is important.

I think that the enjambment in this piece is perfect, and mirrors the constant flow of travelling through life. A tremendous ode to life.
Nenad on Quote – As for energies…
If your mind is filled with thoughts about past and future, your energy isn’t anchored in the present moment and you’re stopping your wish being made manifest because you are mentally resisting and struggling against its fulfilment. Never settle for less, don’t ever think it’s too late, and never, ever, ever compromise a dream. Real world problems are all around us from financial issues to poverty to famine and much more. Often, we look at a problem and think to ourselves that it’s too big for us to solve or there’s nothing that can be done about it anyway. The Law Of Attraction The number one reason most people get stuck while manifesting is they don’t know every vital step to manifest and co-create with the universe.

Hank
Lona Gynt on New Poem – What is this life…
Most of what you you write could be contradicted by the weight and pull of long and dreadful days, but it is the love that makes it all true. Time doesn’t give a flip whether it is brought to its knees or not, but love does care, and you are right to center there. I think this may be what Alyosha Karamazov might have written if his circumstances did not require the kindness of silence. Well done.
Kathy Reed on New Poem – What is this life…

VJ Knutson on New Poem – What is this life…
Your words flow with the suggestion of simplicity, and yet I am caught at the line: “ushered gently into this world” for having given birth to three, and witnessed two other birthings, I cannot find the gentleness. “Challenged to find our way home again, with open hearts” – yes, there is challenge here. There is a serenity in the poem that brushes up against something in me despite it’s inherent beauty.

Glenn Buttkus on New Poem – What is this life…
Superb, brother, your gentle loving stroll rife with metaphysics and white light, peering beyond the veil. I take exception to the notion that birth is a gentle passage; pretty traumatic actually. Being disabled these days I am buoyed up by my poetry and photography. I love your point that we should acknowledge that /it is stunning to be alive/.

Paul Bowles on New Poem – What is this life…
Always great to read your new poem and once again you have hit a spot that recasts an old question of What is life into a new light, as you say lightness. It is a theme that I like and try to wear and hope that it works out that way. But lightness these days is hard, with an old body that is pretty damn stiff most of the time. My grandchildren have that lightness for sure, and I try to syphon some energy from them.
Linda Davis on New Poem – What is this life…
Scott, I am so grateful that I waited til this moment to read your poem. After a block I have been back at my art and joyous. I was truly able to read your words. Wow Scottie! As I read I saw huge blossoms slowly open before me — and then to be touched by pearls — the vision lingered. Toss in the sense of unsung singers followed by a love that draws one to their knees. Such sensory perception — elegant job. Bravo!!!!

Kim M. Russell on New Poem – What is this life…
The title/rhetorical question of the first line and the direct address draw me into your poem and then you take me on a philosophical walk. The phrases ‘Weightless / In this thin bright air’ and ‘Openly and lightly / Like children’ give it an airy feeling while, at the same time, I’m grounded by those simple joys and the thoughts of home.
Munia Khan on New Poem – What is this life…

Neena Sharma on New Poem – What is this life…
So insightful So profound…Congrats Scottie sir on your new Marvel! Yes indeed, Life is amazing, if we have a daily Tete a Tete with the higher self and feel light by transferring our day today burdens or problems, loads of work, on to the almighty and suddenly like a gush of wind, you feel flying high above your mountain like problems, just like an Angel flying high, Light in mind and body , radiating Light and Might to the Globe down. And in your own words as you put it…
It is an amazing feeling, out of the world; So ethereal empyreal!
Along with the chance,
Day by gleaming day,
To come to realise
The more generously
We shine,
The more we will
Blossom and prosper
Along a path
Where how stunning
It is to still be alive
When, just once in a while,
Those who could never sing
Suddenly can
…
Thanks a lot for including me in this…
Much Regard
With all my Divine Love

Don MacIver on New Poem – If you listen…
I have never read anyone to ‘speak’ in such gently muted tones yet fill this space with such grace and beauty, marking life’s journey with remarkable undertones of promise and vision. Scott, you have touched our lives in so many significant ways, all deeply personal, so selfless in giving. Whenever I crave renewed balance I am here. Marvelous.

How deeply you inspire my friend! This is wonderfully uplifting, healing; truly a celebration of life. When I read you, dear Scott, my heart softens, its tremulous beat less erratic, my mind awakened to all those things that truly matter in life. The world desperately needs this right now; the world does indeed need you! We need to love life again for what it was, as it is now, and truly what it could be again for all days to come. Please never tire of spreading the light for it shines a glorious ray of contentment upon our heart and soul.

Sapphire Eagle on New Poem – What is this life…
It runs with the bright flow of a lyrical song, half spoken sung, add a simply 3 strung cigar box (guitar) and one can imagine a beautiful sunset, a stream and sitting on a rock in a soft meadow… As opposed to the harsh world where we are often between a rock and a hard place.

A beautiful piece.
JT Smith on New Poem – What is this life…
Once again, the consciousness of Life’s rewards are bestowed on you. The last stanza includes how Time can bent by a boundless love. it’s very true. All of these details lead into a higher sense of wisdom. It’s these gentle reflections which open more than hearts and minds. The readers follow you on a different type of soul journey. My only regret is that I wish there were more words to express this rekindled beauty. I realise that brevity is a gift. I learn from you as my mentor and friend about the economy of wordage. You don’t have to fill an entire page with overcrowded metaphors.
Anyhow, thanks Scott. we push ourselves into the threshold of our human connection. Thank goodness for that too.
Always,
Jt

Kapardeli Eftichia on New Poem – What is this life…
Hello dear Scott I translate your poem in Greek language Congratulations LIFE IS VALUE
Τι είναι αυτή η ζωή;

Your poems offer something that has become too rare in poetry – the earnest urge to feel and converse, and to share experiences in common. It conveys a passion and accomplishment with language while both attending and departing from tradition. Atop all of that, you are an engaging and convivial ambassador of poetry.

Neena Sharma on New Poem – If you listen…
So Beautiful profound and such an insightful poesy . The sublime verse “There is a constant purr in your soul…akin to a mother nudging her fledglings forward into the light.” bowled me Scottie sir…We need to tend our prattling mind fondling it like a baby, as a mother tends to her munchkins, fostering them lovingly.
Yes I do listen to the pangs of my conscience…The silent Soul Music …the purr of my soul as though saying, HAVE FAITH AND SMILE! Sadness is an offence against the blissful nature of Spirit. By being Happy, we the Children of the almighty do please Him.
As always, this poem too ends on a positive, happy note.Yet the first two verses hold your attention, portraying deep and unfathomable crux of life , depicting the veritable Truth that the nature of Soul is Peace and Love. The inherent attributes of Soul are Peace, Love, Purity, Power, Divine Wisdom or Knowledge ; Happiness and Bliss.
Let us witness the World Drama as a detached observer, remaining untarnished by the alloys of vices( Lust Anger Greed Attachment and Ego), accompanying the Soul…in order to regain the pristine pure qualities of the Soul.
Indeed, we all are Spiritual beings on a human journey, evolving spiritually; delving and diving within to understand ourselves better as eternal imperishable, immortal Souls; on an eternal never ending journey.
Loved reading every line of your unique creative marvel…So authentic and True. Congrats dear poet Friend!
Much regard
Neena

Doug Maples on New Poem – If you listen…
Very peaceful and deep at the same time. The use of short lines is a relief to a lot of poetry with lengthy descriptions that you proved could be conveyed in just minimal words. From your American friend in Mississippi, I really appreciate this. I will go on reading more of your poetry.

In reply to Dr. Jelka Samsom.
Scott says:
Terrific Jelka, thanks for that detail which only helps to reinforce the true meaning of the piece for readers.
Dr. Jelka Sansom on New Poem – If you listen…
As a fervent cat lover, I love the “purr” metaphor you use, Scott! There is more to the word, however, and that is why I feel it is so well chosen. Cats do not merely purr when they feel contented; purring is moreover used by cats as a means of communication and potential self healing.
We, humans, can also use this “purr” in our souls as a way of healing ourselves from “insignificance” and of communicating with “light”.
You gently keep reminding us to listen to this beautiful inner voice and we need it. Well, I do, for sure. Thank you!
Munia Khan on New Poem – If you listen…
You have such an amazing way with words dear Scott. Always your excellent poetry inspires me. And this one is yet another soulful piece of a perfect blessing! We, the poets, guide human souls. Our main search is the search for harmony. But we, as the Bruegel`s “Blinds”, cannot always find it without justice. We sometimes forget and, in expressing ourselves, we don’t always call things by their proper names. I sometimes read your poems. Thank you for sending out new ones.

“If you listen carefully
There’s a constant purr
In your soul …”
What a challenging beginning to a poignant work, especially when many of us never let that smart phone leave our side, never get away from the din of contemporary life, only stop talking long enough to inhale.
J.T. Smith on New Poem – If you listen…
I second that emotion. the light guides us through the darkness of our most precious, sacred souls. There is a certain elegance to these lines as well as a maturation which has refined ink to thought. Well done Sir Scottie. IF you do nothing else creative do read this hauntingly beautiful poem by Scott Hastie. It caught me by surprise read at 4 am when the birds were brightly vocal and coaxing the sun out. I am sure if you grasp the succinct and spartan lines which evoke so much in their simple rhythmic precision. I remembered it in flickers of thought all day and thought how wonderful to have a poem that lingered with you like an old Friend.

Your poems are amazing! I really love them. Your poems are so beautiful! The words you write are Angels from heaven!
Sarah Claudine Day on Readers Comments…
While poetry is generally designed to connect us with beauty and emotion, Scott’s work goes beyond that in an important way: it gives readers the feeling that the teller himself is as lovely as the content, and elevates us to a sense that we are privileged to see things through his eyes. As his work gains a wider and wider audience, this phenomenon will become more fully recognized, but perhaps never fully explained.
Ositadimma Amakeze on New Poem – Striking…

I can’t find the right words to express how this poem affected me. However, it made me smile and realize that beautiful glorious moments do not normally have heralds announcing how beautiful the moment can be. WE just feel it. We just know it. 🙂

Pretty!

Thank you for reminding the old of the ‘Fresh and glorious,’ and the return of a joyous kiss, but that has, thankfully its parallels to appreciate. It is striking that your poem brings us closer to reappraising our moments with greater clarity.

JT Smith on New Poem – Striking…
Even love is emotionally violent sometimes – a trigger point. Does love always return the favour? Yes there is sweetness in having positive experiences, but also a sense of melancholy in how the richness fades over time.
You have captured an existential and meaningful essence here. joy is above happiness. i read that somewhere.
The ultimate sacrifice is being able to lose ourselves in the waning moments in order to discover what we lost from yesterday. We need more healing, your words are a balm for our wounded spirits.
Hank on New Poem – Striking…
This then the beauty
Of being alive,
Pared down
To its very essentials
This then is the reality of life. The bare essentials feature most in all situations. Wisely said Scott!

This made me think of the prayer of St. Francis: “It is in loving, that we are loved…”
Grace on New Poem – Striking…

Frank Hubeny on New Poem – Striking…

Lori Triggs on New Poem – Striking…
It is a beautiful poem, but I lost that feeling over a guy was true and he used me and abused me, so I just do not feel anything one.
Lillian on New Poem – Striking……
pared down to its very essentials….trigger points.”
I wonder if there are penultimate essentials that are universal? Or are we each struck, every time, by different trigger points? Paring down, within different perceptions and unique baggage within our psyches?
Lisa Miller on New Poem – Striking…
I like the line this then the beauty of being alive.
Keep writing. Your words are lovely.
Sanaa Rivzi on New Poem – Striking…
Its beautiful when two people can connect with each other and understand their fears and sense of vunerability. How wisely you depict that truth in your words!
Amaya on New Poem – Striking…Ooh, “Its trigger point.”
There is so much potential energy in this description and so much power as a “conclusion.” (But we’re just beginning, are we not?)
Charlie Zero on New Poem – Striking…

Beautifully well expressed.
Bjorn Rudberg on New Poem – Striking…
Truly love this… somehow the image of that first real kiss is with me still after all this years. There was something perfect about that, but maybe also something that I never can feel again.
Julie Canfield on New Poem – Striking…
Once again you have crafted a deeply meaningful piece. Perhaps it is only me who feels a duality in this work. In fact, I probably am. On the one hand, I see and sense the beauty essence of remembering how it feels to kiss someone who you love who loves you back. But at the same time, I feel the sadness of remembering something beautiful that is lost, forgotten, left behind in the past. This work speaks to me. It tells me beauty can be painted from ashes. It comes from how you let a moment define you. I’ll be posting this link on my websites. Thank you for sharing.
Shari Le Kane Yentumi on New Poem – Striking…
Striking: like flashes of lightning, when bared soul(s) reveal authenticity without hesitation, reservation, or misgivings; to be truly present in the moment with genuine internal reflection/reaction to specific external stimuli/interaction; a confluence.
Mahnaz on New Artwork – Fantasy Forest

Deep Thinker on New Poem – An old view seen anew
I can relate to this poem whilst I am contemplating my journey to the sunshine of my feeling. One of my feelings of inspiration might complement the smooth flowing nature of your poem and this is how it flows – poetical effect is like scent from a flower that can not be created by analysis but by absorbing.

Micki Peluso on New Poem – An old view seen anew
Scottie, a lovely poem yet direct in its message.
And without such sparks
Time can pass by,
Like an empty whisper,
Meaningless and negligent.
Thanks for a timely reminder that life goes forward with or without us.
Bob Mitchell on New Poem – An old view seen anew
I always enjoy reading your poetry, both for the challenge of the genre and the beauty of your words.
Timothy Balding on New Poem – An old view seen anew
Your poems are really very fine and I liked them a lot. You are a good writer, even if, to tell the truth, I generally read little if any verse. You made me think of Auden, one of the few poets I occasionally read for pleasure. If I had to say anything critical? Unless I read the wrong poems, for my taste, at least, you might try to be a little more wicked, self-mocking and ironic. But if these characteristics are not at all in your nature, of course that would be wrong.
Nina on New Poem – An old view seen anew
Thanks, Scott, I like this poem.
Ositadimma Amakaze on New Poem – An old view seen anew
I saw it and now I see it.
It was seen and tomorrow is seeing it.
Yet, the essence of the dynamism of Time
is succinctly captured as in a motion picture.
Loraine Damonte on New Poem – An old view seen anew
A splendid poem, Scott. I think I will enjoy following your poetry. Clear and precise , refreshing with sentiment.
Banu Bidarkund on New Poem – For Dylan Thomas
Remarkable words and realistically true to our life. Indeed we ought to be living
“contentedly” as the poet says.
Banu Bidarkund on New Poem – An old view seen anew
Beautiful. Almost sounds as if one longs for being one with nature.
Jasmine Sroay on New Poem – An old view seen anew
I read your poem titled ‘an old view, seen anew’ The way you write, it looks like you, as a poet are quite hopeful and it gives an optimistic vibe to your work, contrary to me, as I usually write when I’m not having a great day. Your poetry is something which compels me to read it again.
Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – An old view seen anew
I read your latest piece of art and needless to say it’s wonderful and I was filled with awe. We are indeed timid to face the wonders of life. We need to embrace life with passion rather than with reluctance. We are usually gripped by our own prejudices, conditioning, hesitance, fear and ego which constraints us from living. If only we break these walls, take a dive into the gulf and swim across, we would die without having lived.
