AUTHOR STATEMENT:

My poetry looks to positively explore human potential, with an emphasis on love, spiritual growth and self awareness. It is very important to me that my work remains as open, accessible and as simply expressed as possible. My influences vary from the great traditional English visionary romantics through to the distillation of thought and leanness of expression offered by the Japanese haiku tradition, the shining examples of Rilke and Gibran – as well as (being a fully committed free verse poet…) the later technical breakthroughs achieved by leading Scottish concrete poets Ian Hamilton Finlay and Edwin Morgan.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAY:

To write and sell poetry at a profit these days is a minor victory and a major achievement. Scott’s words gently unlock and force you to face and look at the world with a little more optimism. There are moments of deep joy and others, which take your breath away with simple incredible honesty”

G. White

Scott Hastie’s verse is sympathetic, humanistic and positively affirmative. Accessibility is the touchstone of all Hastie’s output. The spiritual element in his writing is clear.”

G.E. Jones

“Scott writes meditative, reflective poetry that is steeped in the traditions of English verse. Concise and richly evocative, he should be widely read.”

R. Godwin

“Via an invisible gilded chain of perception, Scott Hastie generously leads us through an enthusiastic re-invention of the possibilities of new experience. His inspired words bestride the world with such ease, touching the deepest sensibilities of human beings everywhere.”

Sahar Tavakoli

YOUR COMMENTS

J.T. Smith on Timeless – a review by Aria Ligi

Life shakes us like a violent wind. Scott Hastie the ever philosophical poet of our times mirrors our own sadness, fulfillment, and the dreams which run away a long distance. He is eloquent as well as mindful. I learned so much of romantic love from his oeuvre. Aria is a delicate flower that germinates into oneness. I must concur, Pranic Poetry is the magnum opus of Mr. Hastie’s collection of wisdom.
Splinters of Light feels like the culmination of all those decades seeking and wandering and wondering on the essence. I do hope more new writers can rediscover classics. We need to be observant. I implore you to scroll your emotions and pursue the ultimate Truth.

Namaste

Sahar Tavakoli on Timeless – a review by Aria Ligi

I also absolutely agree with all the beautiful details in the review. Scott so obviously writes each line after an inner journey with his soul and Aria Ligi has clearly felt that moment too…

Sunaina Sindhwani on Timeless – a review by Aria Ligi

Absolutely agreed with every point made in this marvellous review!
So well written and well deserved too!

Don MacIver on New Poem – A Love poem

This passage of love and light swept me away, my friend. Having gone through lost relationships, I felt your words, your energy, and I too felt a recompense for having, and losing, the most poignant of loves. Well done, Scott; so well done.

Don MacIver on first reviews for Timeless & Splinters

Years ago when I first came to know of Scott Hastie’s tremendous gift for delivering such a superlative poetic tapestry, I was struck by the scintillating moments of a signature style that touches one’s heart and soul, drawing the reader ever-deeper into the chasm of artful yet highly intuitive, engaging words that paint so many beautifully conceived snippets of life and its daily living… My own tactile responses reflect a deeply personal glimpse and perspective of a world in which we are moved to engagement, dissemination, and a renewed sense of enlightenment. An accomplished writer and poet, artist et al, Scott Hastie so richly deserves the praise and acclamation for word craft so exceptional in today’s literary world. I shall revisit each of Scott Hastie’s publications again and again for the many truths and spirited nuances of love for life and its living within each page.

Don MacIver on Timeless – a review by Aria Ligi

A truly exceptional perspective on the poetry of Scott Hastie.

I have also shared my own deeply personal responses to both of these, his most recent and moving collections, that are an accurate representative of his best work to date in my estimation. Needless to say that from the five-star ratings by all of those who shared their reviews on Amazon: not surprisingly so, the value that each reader associates with yet again these two fine compilations of Scott’s original works, are heartfelt, studied, as well as being passionately individualistic and emotional responses. The Scott Hastie signature delivery assuages the venerable tapestry of transparent yet artfully exquisite moments of a live fully lived, that leave the reader engrossed in something deeper than all that lies just beneath the surface. Truly beautiful evocative writing, fit for devoted consumption, line for line. Aria Ligi’s outstanding review is such a thorough and learned assessment that brings all this (and more…) seamlessly to the fore. Which is much appreciated by us all.

Shari Roberts on Timeless – a review by Aria Ligi

J.John Nordstrom on Timeless – a review by Aria Ligi

I genuflect to Aria Ligi’s outstanding review of Scott Hastie’s Timeless: the best of Scott Hastie’s poetry 1990-2020. She illustrates how Hastie’s poetry is born of the melancholia that afflicts us all as human beings and which melancholia, withal, gets profoundly exacerbated by a culture so nihilistic it cannot give a reason to get up in the morning, except in terms of a market economy, which serves the needs of the body as it denies the soul. For Aria, at least in part, Hastie’s poetic genius consists in his sui generis ability as a poet not only to capture the wonder which every soul of depth fathoms before a sunrise, ocean waves, a flower, but also to convey, in deftly framed verse, the feeling of a deep sadness mixed with joy, that envelops our beings, whence the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge is once consumed, that is, that only poetry can transcend our inevitable mortality.

Margaret Nash on Timeless – a review by Aria Ligi

Wow that is an in-depth review! good for you! I would have probably edited somewhat, as it really is long. Then would take out some juicy bits and spread them around a bit.

Scott says:
Thanks for your thoughts Margaret – whilst I accept that this is rather long compared to many reviews, my view is that all the threads Aria Ligi picks out here are key and so cogently expressed that they deserve fully unravelling in her expert hands. In truth I see it equally as a superb critical essay and not simply a review. There are echoes here too in Aria’s approach that are similar to the marvellous study of ‘Pranic Poetry’ that Nivedita Yohana produced earlier this year – if you remember that?

Banu Bidarkund on Timeless – a review by Aria Ligi

As the title Timeless is apt to Scott Hastie’s work of decades, surely equally matchless is this review’s description and clear analysis of the Poet’s poetic musings within every aspect of our world. I find the reflection of both as priceless as can be… And I am really looking forward to read more of your poems, as your voice surely echoes in the ears of every listening soul like me…. Thank you Scott for being such a true friend to share your creativity with me, across the world.

Dr Jelka Sansom on Timeless – a review by Aria Ligi

Saideh Pakravan on Timeless – a review by Aria Ligi

Thank you for sharing this lovely review and congratulations. I’m in a particularly bad bout of 2020 gloom and your serene, luminous words may be what I need to snap out of these melancholic rumblings and decide that things have not been all that bad during my decades of living.
Best, and many happy days and years to you and yours, and of course Merry Christmas.

Lisa Miller on Timeless – a review by Aria Ligi

Joseph Hobbs on New Poem – A Love Poem

Review of Scott Hastie’s poem ‘What is this life?’:

‘What is this life’ isn’t overlong, a short read that fits comfortably into the average blog post. It keeps your interest, conveys its emotive message (appreciation and contentment of love), and then you’ve read it. Short and sweet. A ‘message’, if there is one, is simply to convey the sense of passive love, from the perspective of an appreciative human being pausing to indulge in the experience.

The title is the question, the topic and you’re thinking of an answer even as the poet’s writing their own. A technique I’ve personally enjoyed, and seen pretty often. Short but sweet, a scene setter.

I find ‘What is this life’ quite typical of Scott’s poems. They share the same general literary form; with more given to simple, easily conveyed sentiments each line rather than being progressions of five word lines or full sentences. Scott is comfortable enough in his emotions and depth of thought creating the nuance and complexity of his art for the audience to digest, rather than adding overly complex vernacular that dissuades from a clear message.

I’ve noticed so far that all of Scott’s poems favor a flow that isn’t restricted by rigidity, a forced consistency of structure. Each poem seems to lend itself to the idea of travelling. Either material travel (reinforced by his accompanying photo gallery), or an intellectual exploration as he asks about life, or reflects in shifting places and wrestles with rumination. Carefree.

At its heart, this poem is a reflection about life and love, how love and realization is at the forefront. There’s an upbeat, joyful tone that synergies well with the fast pace of the writing. shorter stanzas fall into the longer declaration that life is discovery that we can ‘sing’, he shares this sense of wonder and revelation, to break into his last few individual lines of admiration for our existence, just as it is.

As someone new to Scott’s work, I wasn’t sure what to expect. These observations are just my subjective opinion I’m not certain of being correct, and there might be different interpretations. But I decided to give at least one of Scott’s poems a review, because I’ve enjoyed reading a lot of his site and felt like a little attention for art never hurt anybody.

So heartfelt.

Beverley Crawford on New Poem – A Love Poem

In later years it is often that regrets gather, and we have so much less forgiveness for ourselves as we offer others. Beautiful poem, Scott.

Rommy on New Poem – A Love Poem

We all are capable of making the mistake of loving someone the way we think they need to be loved, and overlooking what it is they are telling us they need. And it’s heartbreaking when we realize we’ve inadvertently hurt someone we love.

Chrissa on New Poem – A Love Poem

A poem to shake one out of busyness–meditative and lovely.

Magaly Guerrero on New Poem – A Love Poem

The depth of the speaker’s longing is nearly overwhelming. As I read, I kept wondering how anyone could live with all that wanting and still have energy left to breathe. Then the closing came breath, and things felt just right.

Collen Redman on New Poem – A Love Poem

I especially like ‘to cup the essence of your heartache’ and thinking about ‘sacred chances’ rather than second chances (or second fiddles, ha!).

Makes me wonder more about this beautiful though brief love and the words he was not able to speak. It rings with earnestness and wistfulness.

Don MacIver on New Poem – A Love Poem

This really hits home for me, Scott, as going through a divorce brings about a finality, and in many ways, so many references of reconciled sentiments that typically follow the pain and anguish of a failed relationship, or one otherwise lost.

We are human and thus vulnerable to misgivings and perhaps short-sightedness when it comes to terms of affection and the realisation that something is remiss between the one individual we have perceived to be cherished and indeed special to us, the one we anticipate a lifetime of joy and love with. Your words speak to us in such a moving, reasoned way, Scott. Beautifully touching, this is. Warmest regards.

Don MacIver on Exciting news

Having the recent honour of an advanced reading of Scott Hastie’s ‘Timeless’ manuscript, I was hard-pressed to select favourites! This forthcoming publication is exceptional, its content indeed timeless. Scott has a tremendous way of capturing the deepest of emotional senses and responses. His connection to life is wonderfully cleansing to heart and soul as his words reach new levels of heightened awareness and a symmetry of resonance that is quite truly signature Scott Hastie. I applaud the timely success of Scott’s latest and forthcoming publications.

Glenn Buttkus on New Poem – A Love Poem

A very touching and authentic piece, many excellent lines already noted. Her “beauty” seems to transcend her looks, embracing the spiritual–where actual love resides. This is truly romantic, still in the grasp of regret for what might/could have been. Sadly, in reality a long-term relationship might have led to more heartache and disappointment.

Saideh Pakravan on New Poem – A Love Poem

Beautiful and very moving. Much one can identify with.
Keep them coming.

Kim M.Russell on New Poem – A Love Poem

A beautiful love poem, Scott. These lines touched me deeply:
‘To cup
The very essence
Of your heartache,
Your sadness’
and
‘…Breathless,
I stand in the midst
Of your beauty still.’

Neeena Sharma on New Poem – A Love Poem

Loved those lines:

” To cup

The very essence

Of your heartache,

Your sadness

As Breathless,

I stand in the midst

Of your beauty still.”

So personally touching and melancholic; yet ending on a happy note, as if admiring the beauty of the Spirit…The beauty of the Strength and Resilience we gather in the Yin Yang of the brief sojourn, our journey of Life…Not withstanding the Bouquets and Brickbats(when at times our own efforts get unacknowledged by our own Kith and Kin).

We indeed are capable of so much but not motivated enough.

Thank you for such an authentic personal piece, the every word of which makes it a riveting Read. So inspiring and Loving!

Fond Regards
Neena

Ken Gierke on New Poem – A Love Poem

“Than ever they do
About sacred chances
Taken, even fitfully,
Such as this.

As Breathless,
I stand in the midst
Of your beauty still.”

I think this says it all – recognizing one’s shortcomings.

Lucy on New Poem – A Love Poem

This is so beautiful and breathtaking. I literally gasped to myself at the final lines:

“I stand in the midst

Of your beauty still.”

It ends the poem with closure in some type of way. Such a beautifully composed piece; many evocations of grief and love throughout. Stunning, stunning work.

Congratulations on your love poem. I’ve just read it on your site and see I’m not the only one who likes it.

Maxim Chernikov on New Poem – A Love Poem

Dear Scott, I like Your poetry. I generally believe that poetry should live in the soul of everyone. This is the only bridge from aesthetics to ethics! In the “A love poem… I am enraptured:
“As Breathless,
I stand in the midst
Of your beauty still.”

But, it seems to me, it is more piercing – not ‘breathless’, but more with bated breath!
The heart of the poet is special, because the poet goes through life with bated breath. This is my subjective view anyway!
The illustration is beautiful! Very accurately and definitely resonating with your poem.
I can’t write much: unlike in England, Russian poets are under constant stress!

Sorry my English, please! As a poet and artist from Russia.

Sasho Ognenovski on New Poem – A Love Poem

It’s a lovely poem. I also passed through your web site and I think it’s very interesting.

Banu Bidarkund on New Poem – A Love Poem

It seems that the poet is praising divine beauty, the power it holds in its ability to become breathless, equally as it engenders pain and that renders it gloriously powerful… yet lovingly beautiful still.

Scott says:

Yes indeed dear Banu,
How insightful of you.

Ewoma Okah  Ave on New Poem – Come what may…

This is beautifully crafted. I like the feeling of love.. then the part of the angels.. Does it mean death? Really don’t like the sound of that part. Nevertheless, it’s a soft and beautiful poem..

Scott says:

As to your enquiry Ewoma, as I wrote it, ultimately this poem was looking to speak to a acquiring a certain level of enlightenment or state of grace if you like – which I guess, as you allude to, especially those with faith of some sort, believe might come with death – but one I myself believe to be a state of being that can be yearned for, nobly sought out and at least partially acquired whilst still being alive. Hope that answers your question, Ewoma – you have a great week ahead and thanks again for your interest in my work.

A prayer to pray as ancient religions become musty and tedious …

But wait!
In our hearts
A far kinder dream
Speaks to us still,
Apparent
It’s shape
Belongs to heaven.

Oh, that we could ever
Acquire the humility,
The lift of true grace
To claim it,
More courageously,
Here and now.

In the end, it is between the two of you, the Soul and its Godly connection.
The World Drama being transient, yet enjoy every moment… dancing crooning, like no one else.

I loved the Title of the poem and the way you started it and concluded beautifully. Congrats!

Thank You Scott Hastie for dishing out another marvel of yours

Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – Come what may…

Once again, your poetry comes to me as a confirmation from the Universe, which is forever nudging me in the path of forgiveness and self-love. Your words resound with ancient wisdom that is trapped in the visceral memory of our cells which so often we fail to grasp or fall short of discernment. But you capture it so beautifully, Scottie! Ultimately we all need to chase that “shape that belongs to heaven , here and now as mortal beings.”

The harbinger of things yet to arrive.

We all live in this uncertain state of downsized being. The heart can overcome so much. Dreams need to be reinforced by human love. I think as we age, all of us, notice the beauty in the most simplest and rarest of earth’s elements. This particular writing speaks volumes of our condition. We tend to fade away whenever life gets so heavy like now. Thank you for not surrendering your will not to fail us.

Glenn Buttkus on New Poem – Come what may…

Another poet searching for grace midst a gaggle of uncooperative and ignorant rabble–good luck, sir; good luck to all of us. The planet weeps, plague clouds mask the sun, civil unrest clog the streets, fascism is the flavor of the month, and yet, and yet, if we could just get our minds right, perception precedes progress– Bang on, brother.

Wendy Waters on New Poem – I can still recall…

I have just read all your new poems. I love the glimpse of the world to come that themes through most of them and the bridge Nature builds connecting the two worlds. A sadness permeates them though as if you missed someone along the way. That is perhaps the romantic nature of poets. All poets feel more intensely than others and the joy that sharpens their experiences likewise frames their loss.

Morris on New Poem – I can still recall…

I really love this poem. It touches my heart with it’s romanticism about sharing life’s long journey and the hope that at the end, there is someone there to help make the passing easier.

Your latest collection showcases your versatility. At the same time embracing the nuances of spirituality in the myriad moods of poetry. Indeed Pranic healing… How subtle, yet simple…Reflecting on the upon the visceral truth of our inner being. Great work which should prove to be a riveting read for everyone.

Morris on New Poem – Brand New Collection …

Scott Hastie’s beautiful and deep poetry gently gives us plenty to reflect upon. Who are we? What do our lives mean? What inspires us and frightens us and how do we best navigate our way through such challenges. This the perfect book to be reading in these testing times.

Debbie Stirling on Brand New Collection …

I am mid way through reading Scott’s latest collection.
We are two and a half weeks into lockdown in the Uk
. Somehow the words seem ever more poignant and meaningful reading with the background of the virus .
I have found that moments of extreme emotion often helps us crystallise our thoughts and help us pinpoint and name our feelings.
We are suddenly faced with time for reflection and these poems are helping me distill the mixed emotions of our current situation into a calm acceptance of what is .
It’s interesting how many art forms are speaking to people in a different ways at the moment , perhaps giving us permission to expand our thinking or perhaps to wipe away all thoughts and simply BE
Thank you Scott for another marvellous collection and I am looking forward to rest of the book
Bless you x

Rebecca O’Donnell on New Poem – I can still recall…

Just finished your latest poem and it shook me to my soul. You’re oracular in the timing of your work, always posting something that exactly fits how I feel at that moment. Here’s what I want to say about your work: The poetry of Scott Hastie touches not just the aesthetic value of his beautiful words, but reaches far beyond our senses into our carefully guarded spirit. He weaves a gentle inner voice around us, a soft cocoon that recognizes hardships both past and present, then reminds us of all the light that woke in that darkness. They survive together, a symbiote of light and darkness to keep us from being overwhelmed by either for very long. Scott Hastie’s poetry reminds us of those gleaming moments in divine whisperings of reassurance that when Life seems sightless and cold, we can look upward and inward to find a hearth to warm ourselves and learn to see afresh again. He is a word artist of both infinite depth and spiritual magnitude.

Frank Turner on New Poem – I can still recall…

Scott your work is beautifully evocative, full of deep imagery and assonance. Thereby creating quiet spaces that allow words to weave their tapestry. I have been deeply impressed with these quiet spaces in your verse that speak so deeply to the soul.

Neena Sharma on New Poem – I can still recall…

Oh… so you have found your lost love… How romantic! The way you two met the first time and will part in the end, with Angels welcoming you to their own ethereal World-The Truth that each one of us has to face in the end…after a brief sojourn on earth. However the soul goes on and on…On an eternal journey.

How simple, flowing and full of Love and Hope…Your poesy ends once again (like all others of yours), on a happy note.
Brought a gleam of hope and a glint of smile in my eyes, as I went through it, devouring each line.
Congrats once again!

Greetings and much regard

John Lysaght on New Poem – I can still recall…

Love outside of oneself is a singular fulfillment. In this human union,it is significant to ask another a question that is important to him/her, and that which I am interested in the answer. A life worth living can see angels.

Hi Scott,

You write well. Thanks.

Hi Scott,

Sahar Tavakoli on New Poem – I can still recall…

Scott invites all of us to an endless journey within his words and feed us with fruit for soul in each line.
He gives us new brushes to paint our desired world and a new description for creating a new world which is Pranic and allows us to conciliate our pains with vital life energy. A hidden gem in inner self to heal and balance our soul, he awaken us with the endless dilemma of life and death and shows us, at the end, how we will celebrate life with hope together.

William Bain on New Poem – I can still recall…

Yes, good one. ‘I can still recall’ seems to
me to express something more than a super-
ficial rapture. I am bothered a bit by the ‘should’
statement. That is I suppose a personal call.

I noticed that many people who comment on
your poem place a lot of emphasis on the initial
lines. I tried a kind of experimental approach by
wondering what might happen if the poem
started with the second stanza, then found a
way to introduce the essence of the first.

Forgive my meddling ways. In any case con-
gratulations on the poem; it’s very
good.

Tapan Kumar Gosh on New Poem – I can still recall…

Many thanks for the poem

Rommy on New Poem – I can still recall…

Sometimes we have to trade the security of a moment to move towards something better in the end. The love of a lifetime is worth that little risk.

Don MacIver on New Artwork – Passions Burst…

Scott, this reflects so wonderfully what I so often feel deep inside when I engage in such beautifully artistic pieces, whether in the visual or creative written arts. This is poetry in motion as it were, wonderfully balanced, in harmonic flow and audience reach.

Don MacIver on New Poem – I can still recall…

Oh Scott, how sweet and gently this speaks volumes to me. Coincidentally, “Such again

Is the promise

Of tomorrow,

If we can be

Who we should be…” utters a clear refection of my words in today’s private message to you. “If we can be who we should be”; how utterly definitive of life as we live it! I also mentioned ‘parallels’ in our written expression. Your gift is so much your own, yet ours is the beautiful acceptance and embracing in its reading.

Magaly Guerrero on New Poem – I can still recall…

Looking into someone’s eyes, seeing the truth of what we taste in their words… nothing is as powerful as that. And yes, the knowledge–that someone cares for us as we care for them–sticks to us, and guides us in all things to come (if we let it).

This is precious, Scott. I believe I’ll read it to my husband.

Chrissa on New Poem – I can still recall…

Jae Rose on New Poem – I can still recall…

Such a touching poem of togetherness and love

Paul Bowles on New Poem – I can still recall…

A wonderfully thought provoking poem Scott, curiously and personally so for me.
Creativity would seem to be the ‘souls journey’ and we embark on that ‘imperative’ with the ‘security’ of that ‘precious moment.’ Later we are put to the test, applying it, then we are not so secure. We have to ‘bridge that gap’ from then to now which adds real ‘weight’ to the journey. But we chose then, to begin, ‘unfettered’ by thoughts of tomorrow. Now, if we can be ‘Who we are’ we may see, in reflection ‘how far we have come.’ Perhaps we might earn that ‘best feeling’ when asked ‘how we are,’ as if it truly mattered.

Aria Ligi on New Poem – I can still recall…

Love this. The best part is:

All we’ve since come

To hold dear

Adding real weight

To this, the onward journey

Of our souls.

A choice

To which we first

Exposed ourselves

In that precious moment,

Beyond any imperative

Of staying secure.

The ‘imperative of staying secure’ says it all.

Joseph Malone on New Poem – I can still recall…

This meditation on life, love, & the eventual after life is shimmering. you have simplified your craft and refined it to a point where all the thoughts reverberate. it’s like observing the dance once again. As we grow older and reach an apex of our collective dreams, we begin to recollect on how life is more than us. A soul mate is something which i value yet it eludes me. Love went away and so did my connection to the goddess. Angels are perfect metaphors, their role protects whatever sins or grievances we partake in.

“It was how

We bridged that gap.”

the poem moves so lightly and lovingly across that ever narrowing gap as the two become ‘us’

A lovely and romantic piece. I liked how you described the vulnerability of actual love beyond any imperative of staying secure/. We all hope for “flights of angels” indeed.

Just read some of the poems. Feels like I can read them for hours and not get tired. Soul of Rilke, Rumi, Gibran and our very own Tagore comes forth from your verse, Scott.

Austin C.Morgan on New Poem – Like the curiously…

I have read this poem and I think it’s terrific. Your ideas are big and your verses perform acrobatics around the basic scheme, and yet I saw nothing trite or burning about it. To me, that is the definition of worthwhile poetry.

Ada Aharoni on End of year Report!…

Dear Scott,

I am so glad to to find we have so much in common!
I love your new poem, especially the stanza with which I warmly agree:

So well before the time

To slip away

Gathers too much pace,

So should we all

Endeavor to love,

To leave the best

Of ourselves behind.

Beautifully and profoundly expressed thoughts and feelings, reflecting a state of mind of what I call “the autumn of our days”. This is when we begin asking ourselves what will I leave behind? And what you plan to leave behind: love, kindness and the best of yourself, is so moving and humane, and exactly what I feel and plan too!

I was reading your poems the other day; they are deep, beautiful and extremely spiritual.
